Aves Optometrists

The Staff

Wendy d’E. Vallancey and Mary Bramley graduated from Glasgow Strathclyde in 1987 and went their separate ways to finish their Optometry qualifications. They have both worked in small and large independent practices and also large multiples across the South of England.
Mary never really left Aves, working here part time over the years. Wendy joined the practice in 2001 as a partner when Roger Murray decided to retire. Grahame Dadd retired a year later and Mary and Wendy took over as full Partners in the business. They are both very keen to continue the caring and personal care ethos started by the previous partners.

All our optometrists are qualified and registered with the General Optical Council and are experienced in both eye care and contact lens fitting for all ages.

Wendy d’E Vallancey

Rakhee Shah
Rakhee graduated from UMIST in 2001. She started at Aves in 2008 and has enjoyed becoming part of the community in Ware. Outside work she is a keen traveller and has practised as an Optometrist in New Zealand and has set up eye camps in Zambia.

Sally Cottle
Qualified in 1990, Sally worked in London and later Hertfordshire. She has worked for Aves for over 12 years.

Rinal Patel
Since graduating from City University, Rinal has worked for several of the larger groups of Opticians, but has now settled at Aves and says she has never been happier! Besides working here, she practices at the Hospital and does some face painting at weekends.

Jasmine Smith
After graduating from Cardiff University, Jasmine completed her training at Aves and has been here ever since. When she isn’t here she is normally rock climbing or going to aerial hoop fitness classes.

James Turner
James first started working at Aves straight from University and is still very happy working here seeing regular patients. Away from the practice James enjoys many active and inactive hobbies like travelling, beer and wine appreciation!

Sosena Tang
Sosena joined the Aves team in 2010. She graduated in 1995 from City University, London and completed her MSc in Clinical Optometry in 2004. Her specialist interests are in low vision and paediatric optometry where she has clinics at the QEII hospital. She is also a College of Optometrists Assessor and Examiner.

Daniel Goh
Daniel qualified in 1992 and has significant experience of both hospital based and community practice. He currently heads the optometry service at Luton and Dunstable Hospital in Bedfordshire where he enjoys dealing with challenging cases, particularly those requiring complex contact lens types for conditions such as keratoconus. In his limited spare time he tries to fix up battered old cars that should have been scrapped years ago.

Dispensing Team

Josie Browne
Josie Qualified as a Dispensing Optician in 1998 and joined Aves in 2009. She works part-time and enjoys the lively, friendly atmosphere at Aves. In her spare time she enjoys horse riding.

Irayna Coleman
Irayna, a Dispensing Optician, started with us help out with holiday cover, but loved it so much stayed and is now very much part of the team. Highly fashion conscious and stylish, she enjoys finding the “perfect” frame for her patients. Outside work she is a busy mum and a keen photographer.

Steven Roberts
Steven Roberts is one of our full-time Dispensing Opticians who joined the practice in 2007. He has excellent technical knowledge of Optics and fortunately is also extremely IT literate – a winning combination! He is also a distance learning tutor for the Association of British Dispensing Opticians.

Claire Walsh
Having recently joined the practice, Claire brings her experience and skill to the dispensing team. She is a Contact Lens Optician as well as being a Tutor for ABDO and is currently working towards her SMCTech in spectacle glazing.

Rosie Ede
Rosie started working for Aves as a part time receptionist over 12 years ago. It soon became apparent, however, that she had a flair for dispensing – being able to look at a person and know instinctively what sort of frame shape and colour would suit them whilst at the same time fulfilling the criteria of their prescription. Whilst Rosie hasn’t had the formal training that the Dispensing Opticians have had, she supports the team with her practical skills (she does like to keep things tidy so a colleague might come back from a day off to find that things have been “Rosied”!). Her creative flair colours many aspects of the practice including dressing our windows.

Reception Team

Carol says she is an ‘artforshire ‘edgehog (someone born in Hertfordshire with Hertfordshire ancestry). In her spare time she is interested in social and local history, enjoys touring the UK in her caravan and playing with her grandchildren.

Liz has worked as a receptionist at Aves for over 15 years. In her “spare” time she likes to sail and has 3 boats on the Norfolk Broads. She also works as a volunteer for the local branch of Butterfly Conservation and is recognised nationally as an expert on 2 species; the Purple Emperor and the White-Letter Hairstreak.

Emma has recently joined Aves. When not here, she teaches ballet and dance.

Sandra has worked at Aves for several years and lives locally. She says that it is always nice to see people of all ages that are part of our community, and that it is good for Ware to have a traditional business serving the town and its families.

Anne has lived in Ware for over 30 years, enjoying being part of the local community and meeting people when they come in to Aves. In her spare time, Anne sings with the Ware Choral Society, designs gardens and enjoys life!

Andrew Pirie, one of the original partners, has now retired and would like to encourage his previous patients to see his colleagues at the practice.
